Gibara, La Villa Blanca (the White Village), as it is also known, is the municipal capital of the same name, belonging to the province of Holguín. Its territory has an area of ​​626 sq. km., with a population of approximately 72,392 inhabitants. Its population density is 115.6 inhabitants per sq. km., with a growth rate of 4.23 per 1,000. The city’s Urban Historic Center was declared a National Monument by the National Monument Commission on 12 January 2004. Since 2002, it has hosted the Humberto Solás International Non-Budget Film Festival (Festival de Cine Pobre).
